Qualifications! :)

I haven't been in the mood to type over the past couple of days but I have good news today! After a very crazy and very rushed beginning to the second year of my second degree I have found out today that I have passed! Wooo! I now have a foundation degree in Playwork and am now a officially a qualified Playworker from Leeds Metropolitan University! Wooo! Onward towards a full degree by studying my third year to get my Bachelor's degree in Playwork. It sounds amazing already. It's been an awesome year :)

Meet the Team!

Today was the first time that all of Pop-Up Adventure Play's team members met face to face for the first time. It was a wonderful day of play and fun and just getting to know one another!

Alex (Anna's daughter), Anna, Erin, Morgan, Sharon, Suzanna and Daniel

I'm so glad that we've finally managed to meet, and it's been awesome to just be in the same place at the same time. We also met lots of very awesome people today, which I'm sure I'll talk about in days to come but yeah, it's been a day of meeting and greeting. And of play too! Absolutely! Yay for Pop-Up Adventure Play! :)

Preparing for another playful weekend

Fridays are days where I have to mentally prepare myself for craziness. When I'm in the UK, weekends are my busiest times -  I meet friends, I run errands, I have stuff to do. In the US, I have to mentally prepare myself for a weekend of playfulness, full of surprises, and an opportunity to test my playworker skills to the limit.

Just to throw something new into the works this week, I've also had my family firmly lodged in my mind. Things at home are a little unpredictable at the moment, and even from all the way over here I can hear and feel the thick emotions that are in the air. My heart goes out to my mum who is probably having the hardest time with all of this stuff, and I wish I could support my dad and sister during this time too. Sucks to be away from home when a whole load of stuff is happening. I pray that everything works out in the end. Love you.

Another weekend, another challenge. Bring it, NYC. And bring it, crazy family happenings.

Introduction to Team Pop-Up

I'd like to introduce to you some of Team Pop-Up, especially because this weekend, Team Pop-Up will gather properly for the first time ever! So here are a few pictures of the team. I haven't asked their permission for the pics to go on my blog, but they all look pretty in these photos, so I'm sure they won't mind....

Anna is the final member and will be arriving this weekend to play with us on Governors Island! Wooo! How exciting! :)

The Game is A Foot!

I mentioned in a post last week that I went to a super duper bookstore and we went back again today! It was so much better this time because I wasn't as overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the place as much and managed to actually focus and buy myself a book!

Unfortunately, this is actually a book that I kinda already have. You see, some time last year, I stumbled across Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and for some reason haven't been able to stop reading about this awesome character. It's just the perfect blend of mysterious action and unpredictable characters that has kept me hooked! I bought an awesome anniversary version of the book when I was in the UK, but I kid you not - the thing is a beast. It could well be a breeze block in a very literature-savvy house! Because of it's weight, size and shape, I couldn't fit it into my suitcase for my trip so I couldn't bring it with me :( I'd brought a small paperback token (that belong's to my brother) but I was rapidly running out of awesome detective stories.

So I bought another one. Yes. Just to keep me going. And on the weekend I finish it, I will sell it back to the Strand. And get me some dollars back. I think it's a good plan! :) And no book is wasted in the process! Woo! :)

Governors Island - Weekend Roundup

Happy Father's Day!

It's been a weekend of scorching summer heat on Governors Island, NY. I'm very warm and have played for so long I'm exhausted!

I was so sad when I got home from play working that it was half 7 and so it was past midnight in the UK and not father's day anymore. Sad! So I haven't had chance to call home and say Happy Father's Day! Awww. I'm glad I was pre-emptive of the situation and had sent my Father's Day gift and card pretty early on. Wooo!

So photos later on this evening, but for now - hope the Dads of the world had a happy day and had lots of fun. Or food. Hmm... food... :)

Pop-Up Fun! :)

Pop-Up Adventure Play had a special delivery today to take onto Governors Island! It was very exciting and a bit complicated, and then it got very rainy so we had a crazy day! Everyone's home now and our new stuff is on site ready for a big play day tomorrow! Woooo! :) Hope the weather is nice tomorrow! :)

Holey Building

It's a bit like futuristic cheese. Hmm... cheese... :) We think it might be a hotel. I'd definately pick this hotel for it's novelty. :)

There is wonderful news, and there is sad news.

The wonderful news is that we raised over $1000 in the Governors Island IndieGoGo Campaign! Woooo! :) There will be more fund raising events over the summer, but we are very happy to have made so much, and can't quite believe we know so many wonderful people! A huge thank you to everyone who helped out, in whatever shape or form! :) Yay! :)

The sad news is of my Uncle. He really isn't very well and our family has had to pull together to support one another through this tough time. He's been hanging out at a hospital for a while now but we now know what's up with him and we really hope that the right decision can be made about his treatment. For those that do, please pray for my Uncle, and for my family.

On a completely different tangent, it's very warm in the US. Very warm. Makes me happy :)

Governors Island

I had an amazing Saturday on Governors Island working on my first Pop-Up Adventure Play session of the summer. Lots of families came to visit and everyone had loads of fun! :) It was pretty hot but there were a few speckles of rain during the late afternoon. Here are some pictures from the day :)

More pictures next week! :D Yay for Pop-Up Adventure Play! Just a few more hours to donate towards our IndieGoGo Campaign to keep the Governors Island Pop-Ups going! Please donate generously! :)

A Crazy Beginning

I've only been here for a day and a half and already I have had quite an adventure. I haven't got the energy to go into detail right now, but I can list some highlights for you:

witnessing a car accident
rediscovering awesome pizza
riding a ferry
finding a pre-prepared pop-up
renting a bike for free

Oh yes. More maybe tomorrow after my first ever Governors Island Pop-Up Adventure Playground! Stay tuned.... :)

One More Sleep

I've spent the whole day doing lots of very trivial but important things: packed by suitcase, put some stuff in bags, threw out loads of receipts, organised my cupboard... they're all good things! And I have pictures too! Sadly, Blogger is decisively unhelpful today and won't post up any of my photos. So today, I'm going to have to go photo-less.

So I'm going tomorrow. To the States I go, again! :) This time to volunteer on a fantastic project which I will be completely involved in. You too can be involved! Just donate some time or money towards this wonderful project by telling people about Pop-Up Adventure Play, and how a couple of dollars can go a very long way! :) Thank you all so much! :)
